I TEDDY studien undersöks blodcellers genuttryck i ett blodprov som tas vid varje besök. En förklaring till genuttryck är hur informationen lagrad i en gen (DNA) omvandlas till en funktion t ex ett protein som kan vara ett enzym. Risken för att ett barn ska utveckla autoantikroppar mot vävnadstransglutaminas (TGA) och celiaki beror till hälften på ärftliga faktorer, framför allt av HLA-typen DQ2 på kromosom 6.
